Just put in tank yesterday- he seemed to try to move out of the light, and receded somewhat. This morning he looked more out- though only one third the size at the lfs. I put cyclopeeze and flake food in the tank, he receded into a crevace, balled up, and some "stringy stuff"is coming out. What's going on?

It had just come in to lfs - MH I believe- LEDs for me- but, just switched to LEDs, so oinly at about 55%- acclimating tank.

Im have the same problem with my red rose tip anemone. when i first got him, i put him on a rock that was closer to the top of the tank. next day i found him under the rock in the shade so i just flipped him around and he stayed there. then, when i moved my take 3 weeks later from a place 1 hour away, somehow he broke up and became 3 different pieces. the original piece stayed on the original rock. a smaller piece that was about the size of a quarter crawled into a crater where it got some lighting. the other fell into my pipings and didnt find him in my refugium untill 3 days later. by that time it broke into another 2 pieces that i found in my refugium. i tried to put them back into the main tank but one didnt survive. the other one keeped going into the shadows and the tips would always be pointed down and shoves its tip into the rock so there would be no light exposure. i dont know what's wrong. if anyone is able to help.

my tank is a 55 gallon with 2 year old VHO lights, giving originally 440watts. I doubt its getting that much now which also reminds me to ask if anyone know a place or website to get cheaper light strips?

He's out today- but still only 1/3 of the size it was- doesn't seem to like strong light. The lights are 9"above tank at 55% power, the anenome is about 10" down in the tank. I guess he balls up when he eats?

The brown stringy stuff is possibly zooxanthellae. They sometimes expell it as they acclimate to a new tank. Also, the deflating/inflating is part of the acclimation behavior of a BTA. Flake food isn't what an anemone needs to eat, try fresh foods like squid, silversides, shrimp or mysis. I've never had any luck with an anemone keeping cyclop-eeze down either, though some people do feed their anemones with it I've read. What are your water parameters? pics might be helpful also.

I wasn't feeding the BTA flake food or cyclopeez- there are fish and corals in the tank, it was his response to it. I also feed mysis. I can't get an answer- do they ball-up when they feed? How do they look when they take something in? Thank you.

No, they don't typically ball up when they feed. They take the food in and remain inflated. Sometimes the next day they will deflate and expell waste, however, you might not observe that, especially with small feedings.

When they take something in you can see the tentacles move the food to the mouth which will open and take the food item in. The anemone overall will look about the same as before feeding. Just the tentacles that are carrying food will withdraw toward the mouth.

So, the deflaing and inflating is adjustment to my tank? When i did a water changed yesterday he balled akll up- this morning he was nicely out.
