Rotifer Culture

Can I culture rotifers using rotifeast as starting culture. Is it alive or dead but whole rotifers?

Thanks for your answers!

I believe that Roti-Feast is a preserved product. The adults rotifers would all be non-living, and I think that your chances of finding a diapause (resting) cyst in the bottle would be slim.

Your best bet would be to start a culture with resting rotifers from Florida Aqua-Farms.

You could also sub-culture from somebody who has a culture going, but of course you'll "inherit" any contaminating organisms they may have in their culture....

Like Jay said, Roti-Feast is a dead product. The rotifers and eggs are still intact, but non viable. I HIGHLY doubt you ever find a cyst in Roti-Feast as I've never seen our systems go south like that. FWIW we also sell live rotifer cultures via our parent company, Reed Mariculture.
