rotifer question

My rotifers arrived today, but the algae I was going to feed them didn't-which was supposed to be hear.

I was wondering if I should put them in the refrigerator to temporarily store them so that they may make it till there food arrives.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

You can place them in the fridge. Mine survived about a week without being fed. When you make your culture water make sure to match the ph to the rotifer ph, I made the mistake of not adjusting the ph, and it took almost a week for the rotifer culture to recover. I'm waiting for an order from Pacific Aqua Farms, and have been feeding my rotifers Reef Nutrition's Phyto Feast, and it's been working for me.

Can I get that at the store. Just plain yeast?
Also, how much of that should I feed and should I just leave them in the bag they came in and feed a little?
Thanks

Yes, you can get it in the store. I would get a small glass or something to mix a small ammount of the yeast with some water. I use enough to make the water in the rotifer tank slightly cloudy. I feed again when the water clears. I would not just leave the rotifers in the bag. I would use a 10 gallon tank or even a 5 gallon bucket to house the rotifers. When you get thier numbers up, go ahead and get another batch up and running.

I would split the culture into several smaller containers. This will reduce the risk of loosing everything due to a crash.

Yea, thats why I said to get another batch going. I guess I should have said to get a few batches going!:) Good luck!!!

Just picked up some yeast. Going to get a couple batches going. One in a 10 gal, and then a couple small buckets.
Thanks again.

Well, the yeast seems to be working which is good, however, the algae is not going to get here till tuesday and im expecting 100+ clown larva sunday night! Will they make it on the yeast fed rotifers till I can enrich the rotifers tuesday? SO, should I even try raising this nest or just wait till the next one?

Rotifer food

As mentioned already, brewers yeast is a good substitute. You can also use V8 juice in a pinch, just watch that you don't overdo it and polute the water too much.

It does really depend on how long "temporarily" actually is. They can survive up to about a week in the fridge, so long as they have a ready food supply in their container. The unfortunate part about it is that as they consume the food, they will become less and less nutritious to whatever you are feeding them to. So long as the time without food is short, you should be fine. If that time is more than a few days, you may experience a crash with them, but you can recover from a crash rather easily if you catch it in time.
