Royal Blue Zoanthid Colony How rare?

Like this but green skirts?

i'd say it greatly depends on the area in which they are being sold. and its more of a craze, and sudden demand for them rather then them being coined as "rare".

1year ago, in Richmond, VA i'd say they were going for several bucks a polyp. now they might be barely $1/polyp there. an area like maryland and DC i'd say they are very common now. the DC market seems to get saturated with "rare"/fancy/LE corals pretty fast since thats a major airport hub where things come in at (or so it seams), or other reasons like due to the fact theres so many people living in that area, and lots of saltwater specialty stores.

I still see true blue sell for 5+ dollars a polyp on smaller frags. Larger frags are a bit cheaper. If you really know where you can find a buck a polyp, please post it here. I see alot saying that about corals lately and I wonder if it is completely true as a whole because I don't see it on here on anywhere. I wonder if it is to "try" to get the prices down or if the reefers in the area are just nice so the prices are that way for the locals.

I get nice SPS for 25 bucks a frag from LE to super pink milles that are 3" + frags from fellow reefers. In a whole however, it isn't that way everywhere.

Just a note: I'm not saying anyone is lying :)

Pay what you think a frag is worth. If you are new to keeping zoas, look around internet sites, LFS's, and club forums for estimates on pricing.

well, like i said....a year ago, in Richmond, VA i remember them going for big bucks at certain LFS's. now, it seems those same stores cant even sell small frags of blue zoas, b/c everyone in the area has them...so the price has literally bottomed out. or at least everyone in the area who is familiar with the "craze" has them now.

those same LFS say, that supposedly their supplier charges them also per polyp. i think the jurry is still out on that though...

my LFS (in southwest VA...near WV), gets in colonies at a fixed price, they are all $35 no matter what the color (this is a wholesaler out of LA, i dont know the name). sometimes when they are overstocked they sell them at $25. i lucked out and got a colony of 400polyped blue zoas with red skirts for $25 back in october. sorry for the terrible white balancing.

this isnt a common occurance for them to get something like that in, but i'd say once per month or two they will get in something like that. i cant say i've been really looking either though. also, the LFS local to me, is a "mom and pop" pet store in a small town in the mountains...no where near the caliber of a saltwater specialty store in a city, so theres no hype on certain corals so to say...

one reason, is that southwest virginia is a rather poor socio-economic area, so if a store said they were gonna charge more money for a coral just b/c of its color, they are gonna get laughed at and they will most likely never sell it.

i'm not a business expert, these are just my observations from the virginia area. so i think the price is simply put supply vs. demand to a certain area.

if you are selling/buying in a local area, research to find a competitive price from other places in the same area. if its an internet store, do the same research across the internet to find a competitive price there. whatever people will pay for their own gem is their business really when it comes down to it. so if it works for you go for it. :)
