well, like i said....a year ago, in Richmond, VA i remember them going for big bucks at certain LFS's. now, it seems those same stores cant even sell small frags of blue zoas, b/c everyone in the area has them...so the price has literally bottomed out. or at least everyone in the area who is familiar with the "craze" has them now.
those same LFS say, that supposedly their supplier charges them also per polyp. i think the jurry is still out on that though...
my LFS (in southwest VA...near WV), gets in colonies at a fixed price, they are all $35 no matter what the color (this is a wholesaler out of LA, i dont know the name). sometimes when they are overstocked they sell them at $25. i lucked out and got a colony of 400polyped blue zoas with red skirts for $25 back in october. sorry for the terrible white balancing.
this isnt a common occurance for them to get something like that in, but i'd say once per month or two they will get in something like that. i cant say i've been really looking either though. also, the LFS local to me, is a "mom and pop" pet store in a small town in the mountains...no where near the caliber of a saltwater specialty store in a city, so theres no hype on certain corals so to say...
one reason, is that southwest virginia is a rather poor socio-economic area, so if a store said they were gonna charge more money for a coral just b/c of its color, they are gonna get laughed at and they will most likely never sell it.
i'm not a business expert, these are just my observations from the virginia area. so i think the price is simply put supply vs. demand to a certain area.
if you are selling/buying in a local area, research to find a competitive price from other places in the same area. if its an internet store, do the same research across the internet to find a competitive price there. whatever people will pay for their own gem is their business really when it comes down to it. so if it works for you go for it.
