Royal Gramma ...

I have a very well established reef aquarium with lot's of peaceful and friendly fish. Clown, gobies, bleeny, dragonet, firefish ,...
A month ago I added a Royal Gramma. I saw it for about two. then it went hiding in the rocks and I never saw it again. This week I added a new one. Same thing. Straight into the rocks and I never saw it again.
Now my question: Do they hide and never come out or is it just a coincident and both of them died?

Thanks

Mine stays close the rocks most of the time but he's out and about. If another fish is chasing yours it may not want to come out. If you don't see it I guess it's hard to tell if something is othering it.

I've had mine for over 3 years. He started out in my 44 gal. When I first added him, he hide almost all the time. I forget exactly how long, but I think it took months before he started coming out for long periods. He's been in my 90 for over 2 years now and he's out almost all the time, but does occationally retreat back to his spot in the rocks. HTH

I think all fish have certain personalities. When I purchased my Royal Gramma he was in a small vial with holes floating in a tank with a bunch of other Royal Grammas. Some were shy and some were bold. The one I picked was actually opening its mouth really wide at me to scare me away. I figured he had the bravery to handle my tank and my fish watching mini schnauzer. He just likes to sit in a chair and watch the fish with the occassional paw to the tank when the wrasse is being wild.

Anyway, when I popped the Gramma in the tank, he hid for 2 hours, but then afterward he decided to take up a perch on the live rock in the middle of the tank and was quite aggressive during feeding. He wasn't even afraid of the Navarchus. Before that though, I did have a Royal Gramma that hid and never appeared again. I chalk it up to personality.

Ah ... he finally came out a couple times today after work ... but he never lasted very long. My yellow tank, a very friendly and peaceful guy usually always chases him right back in the rock. I guess he has a problem with the yello part of my Gramma

Mine is always out in my 37g. I am about to move everything over to my 120g, we'll see how he does. There is actually more rock in the 37g then the 120g though.

Mine only comes out at night when feeding. I can see him during the day but he doesn't venture very far out of the rocks.

there are some royal grammas that are definetely shy ... mine hide for more than 3 months and one day decided to be more sociable ...

They will get used to each other. You may just have 2 in there if you added the second one. I have 2 in my 90. They argue occasionally but get along well. Neat fish.

Mine is the boss and is pushing 2.5 inches and has a little temper, so when ever the other fish do something he dosen''t like he swims ove with his mouth open. Mine used to hide for the first 6 weeks than he slowly became braver and eventually became the boss.

I got a gramma 2 weeks ago & he disappeared for about 2 days. Then started to venture out at meal time. Last weekend he started staying out when my Hawaian White spotted Tobie was hanging out at that end of the tank. Now he stays out most of the time except runs and hides when the male black saddleback clown runs at him (he's all bark & no bite). :)

I think its also the way you add them.

If you add them last you dont give them much chance of obtaining a small piece of real estate to call their own.

Adding them earlier and they may become a bit more bolder as they have their own territory.
