Rubber Gasket material

I went to home depot in search of some sheets of rubber gasket material and the guy I asked didn't know what I was talking about. Can anyone help with the best place to get some rubber gasket material for my DIY calcium reactor?

I've used the red sheets from Home Depot before. Work ok. They come in 6" x 6" square sheets called Red Rubber Sheets. Can't remember which isle they were in though. Been a while.

You can buy shower pan liner from HD or Lowes, maybe Ace hardware. It is Neoprene or Buna-N rubber. Better compounds are available, but almost anything will do.

Rubber is usually measured in Rockwell or SHORE hardness.

The most common is SHORE and the readings are in a units refered to as DUROMETER. The lower the number the softer the compound. Skateboard wheels range from about 80A-110A in hardness. O-Rings are around 60A-70A All season tires are around 60 and Rubberbands around 30.

You can get sheet goods in just about any hardness. The softer it is the more it will stretch and possibly deform, but will seal with much less pressure. Harder duromater gaskets take more pressure to seal, but are also harder to deform or squeeze out of shape.

Ther is a guy on ebay called Rubberman (or something like that) that sells tons of the stuff. I have purchased several yards of different typs of meterial from him, and always been very happy with the product. U got a huge piece for a vacuum table that was 30 hardness or so, and some heavy duty stuff that was around 60 for some wear/shock pads for a project.

Check with the "Snap On" guy or "MAC" guy. They sell thin rubber material to line the tool boxes. Closer cells than a mouse pad but very similar. Sears may also have the stuff. Not very expensive. Never used it on the tank, but who knows, may work great.

What thickness do you recommend for a CR flange. I think I might order from the ebay guy. I'm looking at the 70a or 60a. It seems he has some nice rubber. That kind of sounds funny saying it.

I bought a silicone baking sheet to make the gasket for my CA reactor. It is very pliable and seals perfectly. Cost was $10 and there is enough to make several gaskets.

I think any thickness will do. PM him and tell him your purpose, he may have some small pieces he could sell you for a few bucks. I would get the stiffer stuff and look for it in the 1/8 to 1/16 range I guess.

Where do you find these?? I've never heard of these before... housewares at a walmart or something???

Is it flexible or rigid... does it compress??

I've got a flange on my DIY skimmer I need to seal...

I think most of us are wanting inert type material-- silicone fits the bill I'm quite certain.

That looks pretty much like the one I used, except mine is a nice lime green colour. It is quite pliable as the material is less than 1/8" thick. It is silicone, so it is soft yet reasonably tough, pretty much the same texture as the silicone from a tube when cured.. Also, pretty sure it is food safe and thus reef safe. I got mine at Canadian Tire, but Wal-mart or any place that sells household goods probably would have them.

Go to lowes or HOme Depot and buy some of the EDPM pond liner material in 45 0r 60 mil thickness. More than sufficient for a gasket like your wanting to make and certainly is fish safe. Less than $2.00 or so.
