Running 9010 without the extension tube?

I've got a 9010 and I'm wondering if I can run it in my sump without the extension tube (like 9005.400)? I've got a Tunze ATO so the water level will always be constant. What impact will the impact be if I don't use the extension? Thanks.

It will work without but needs a consistent deeper water level of 9.5-11" inches.
