Rusted Vortech MP10 impeller?

I was cleaning my pumps and noticed this on my MP10 impeller, thinking it might explain some recent mystery tank issues. Do these rust or is this something else?

That's pretty unusual for a wetside to corrode. That said, please contact our customer service department directly for information on having it replaced.

Is there a reason you guys made me pay half price for 2 wetside replacements because mine were out of warranty when many people in this thread (and many other places online) with the same issue out of warranty are reporting they had theirs replaced for free?

I didn't feel it was right to have to pay for a product that was malfunctioning in a way that was killing my corals, but I am substantially less enthused about having done so now.
