Rusty Hinges

Hey Guys and Gals!

My tank has been setup for about 9 months and the hinges are starting to rust. Anyone have any tips to help? I was thinking brushing them down and putting a little Vaseline on them? Any problems with that?

Thanks!
Kelley

You need stainless steel hinges.

Unfortunately not an option.... I have built an antigued style hood and cabinet. Stainless steel would not look right.

I see no problem with your solution... Its not a permanent fix, but it will extend the life of the hinges and frequency of having to maintain. I am guessing that your hinges dont come anywhere near contacting your tank water.

One of the major name makers of saltwater brand stuff makes a spray just for hinges that helps with rusting. I don't think it prevents it totally but helps keep it to a minimal by spraying it on and wiping it off once in awhile or maybe just spraying it on and leaving it . It might have been Coralife or the like but don't know how well it works. I just remember reading the bottle one day in a fish store.

It was by Coralife

Its Coralife Salt Creep Eliminator

It says it protects equipment from salt damage. Contains corrosion blockers and rust inhibitors and..........

Its on the Coralife site
