#1 is probably the most effective, unfortunately.
#2 I don't see this being a viable option cause siphoning up is difficult.
#3 is the way I would go.
There's dispute amongst those in the hobby of how many pods make through the return pump whole or in pieces. There is the option of a refugium that hangs on the back that overflows into your DT. In my 210 that's in the works, I'm having a fuge built into it. It will mirror the overflow box but have many drilled holes for circulation and pod escape. It's a bit tedious to do in an existing aquarium but, depending on how it has been aqua-scaped, it could be drained several inches, siliconed in and filled back up over the course of a day and a half.
