SA Mai Tai Clownfish

My LFS just got these fish in and they could not give me much info because they said this is the first time they have ever had experience with them. I am setting up a 93g cube and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with these fish? I used to own a pair of gold stripe maroons but had to get rid of them because they would fan the sand bed all the time and the female would always throw corals off the rocks. I have had other clownfish before but only the maroons would behave like this and from what I read it is quite normal. I am wondering if these Mai Tai clowns have the same traits since they are a maroon hybrid? I cannot put up with fish throwing around corals or sand in my new tank.

any input is very much appreciated.

I've got two blood oranges (female maroon x make ocellaris). Mai tais are male maroons x female ocellaris. My female is a typical maroon almost fully. Fans the sand by her anemone, gives her man a beating once in a while, and chases fish from her nem. But when she cruises the tank, she's not a bully. Definitely a tamer version but not fully. Then again I've always like maroons. My tank is relatively peaceful too and she's not a menace

I was hoping someone wouldn't say that. I like Maroons too and mine did not start fights but would chase fish away from the nem and always put the male in his place every know and then. The only thing I couldn't take was throwing corals off rocks and fanning the sand. The sand was the worst because my tank was always cloudy and there would be giant hills like a land mine field hit it.

You have said why I got rid of my Maroon pair. My female Gold stripe never did any beating up or chasing of the male, but she sure did move stuff. Many frags were thrown around the tank and she would fan sand around my beautiful Elegance so she had to go. To try and stop her from fanning the sand I placed a rock in the way. Well that Queen "B" picked up the rock and moved it out of the way over 6" past the Elegance. That day I put both of them in the sump and traded them for a Mocha pair and a BTA.

I'll say that I think the Gold Stripe Maroon is the best looking of all of the clowns, to me anyway. But unless I set up a tank designed around them, I'll never own another one. It's a love/hate kinda thing :hammer:

So, since the Mai Tai is made up of Maroon clowns I fully would expect them to have the same behavioral issues.

I have a pair of the original Maitai clowns (before SA bought the parents) and they are great.
They are aggressive towards other clowns, but not towards each other...
Interestingly most of the guys whom had the originals say that each fish has its own personality.
Some fought to the death, some were totally passive.

Mine are very passive except towards other clowns...

The femaile is now about 3" long, beautiful orange belly and maroon dorsal and is about 1/2" in girth... She astounded me by instinctively feeding her nem after it was put into the tank with her.
The male is about 2" and seems to be supportive of her...

I love these fish!
