Found this little guy for sale locally, and I had a little concern about it. The pics were taken at around 10:30pm so the lights were out for a couple hours, then turned on for these pics. What concerns me is the spots behind and in front of the eye, and under the dorsal fin. is this normal for a sailfin "just waking up" or is it something like HLLE I should avoid?

looks like HLLE to me, that said still a petty fish .With good care could recover and thrive for many years.

agree with above. Just keep a good diet like nori and maybe feed some garlic with your food.

Thanks guys, any other opinions? I usually add selcon and/or vitachem once a week to some formula 1 and 2 flakes and formula 2 pellets and feed mysis, spirulina brine, and cyclops a couple times a week to the tank, would that be enough to reverse the HLLE (if thats what it actually is)? The seller claims to have been feeding a diet of nori and formula 2 flakes.

If you want the HLLE to go away you will need to feed much more than that. Twice a day at a minimum, preferably more. These fish are grazers in nature who eat all day long. They should be treated the same in aquariums.
