Salifert Potassium VS Triton

Reefing since '93
What's everyone's results?

I have one of the new Salifert Potassium test kits that I opened on April 14, 2016 with expiry 08-2018.

Salifert 420 ppm
Triton 363 ppm

A ~250 mL sample of aquarium water was collected, and the samples for each test were collected from this larger sample.

This is a disappointing difference. :hmm2:

I've found that I tend to get a lower result my first test with the Salifert Potassium test kit as opposed to the second time I test. I think I'm not cleaning the tip correctly on bottle 3.

I get the same result with every test on salifert. I rely on that test, if it reads above 430 I will see issues and that's about right. I am sending a sample out soon and will try Triton this time. My potassium gets depleted very fast, if I don't dose it will go from 420 to 375 or so in a week.

Guys, I'm not asking about repeatability...I'm asking about yur own tests vs Triton testing. I get the same number in repeat samples too. That means nothing. :)

My Triton test came in +/- where the test kit was telling me it was - not using Salifert one tho - using CS Test Potassium - didn't check the K before i sent the sample water off so nothing exact to add

That's a bit of a worry if the kits are off Mindy. With the sudden blue color shift when adding the reagent drops to get a reading i don't think user error is a factor. I did consider this considering you're Canadian and all Mindy, but as i said, the Salifert K test is pretty goofball proof. :twitch:

I've been doing nothing but AF comp 123 and 10-15% AF reef salt weekly water changes for three weeks now and planned to get a Triton after two full months of just that to see what shows up. No help now but i will keep this thread in mind when i get the test done. :)

Your copper result is reassuring to me btw, i reckon the micro e is the serious poison doser.........

Interesting. It's always possible that I have a bunk kit. :)

Hahaha Andrew! You're right, the Salifert kit is pretty tough to goof, although once I did mess up the volume of tank water and that gave me a whacky number, so it's possible!!! :hmm3:

After some digging, it seems Aquaforest is predictably low in sulfur and high in bound Barium. I will continue my digging. :)

Yeah, don't worry about the copper so much. Copper is not the devil. :smokin:

I read some gfos will make the tank have high barium, I think some aluminum based ones. Don't know if your using one but figured I would throw that in there.

Paul, the actual salt mix is high in bound Barium according to Triton testing from what I've seen of people posting results. My tank doesn't even know what a phosphate media is - never used one on this tank.

I see, your lucky you have never had to use gfo! That stuff is a pain.
