Salinity Question - Math Experts Required

Hey all...here is your math question for the day (this is really for fun, I am not really this anal).

Looking for some guidance on this one, my salinity is at ~1.023, I would like to get it up a bit to 1.025. I know it takes 1 cup per 2 gallons (of IO), at least this is the recommendation on the container. Does anyone know what that gets your salinity up to? I have heard it gets it to 1.022, but I am not sure (of course this would change all of the work I did below).

I want to raise it up .002 so I am thinking I need to add approx 6.5 cups (figuring I have a total volume of about 140 gallons - tank and sump) - see my math below.

Ok follow my math before you tell me I am crazy:
- If 1 cup (16 oz) brings the salinity of 2 gallons up (from 0 to .022) then to get one gallon up .22 you need 1/2 cup (8oz)
- I want to get one gallon up .02, so that would be .091 cups (.002/.022) or .727 oz (.091 X 8 oz) per gallon.
- Sooooooo...(.727 oz X 140 gallons) = 101.8 oz. Divide that by 16 oz to get the total cups and you get 6.4 cups.

Is this right?!?!?!?!?!

Phew...my brain hurts!!!

hahahaha...well frank, Since you are only having fish right now i would run it lower between 1.019 -1.023...lol...see now your brain doesnt have to hurt..

well...........

we'll have some corals :) Getting some of my old stuff back, and Adam is going to supply some frags of zoa, xenia, even a few SPS (to try up high).

I have never figured that out I just add a little each day till I am at the correct level if I am low, It looks right to me , but remember all of that is relevant to the temp of the water ....

Sorry to rain on your parade.

1 cup = 8 oz
1 pint = 16 oz
1 quart = 32 oz
1 gal =128 oz

Why don't we switch to metric it is so much easier;)

Dave

This all assumes you are talking ounces by volume and not ounces by weight in the case 1 pound = 16 ounces.:mad2: Metric, metric, metric where are you?

Lets try this again:

- If 1 cup (8 oz) brings the salinity of 2 gallons up (from 0 to .022) then to get one gallon up .22 you need 1/2 cup (4 oz)
- I want to get one gallon up .02, so that would be .091 cups (.002/.022) or .364 oz (.091 X 4 oz) per gallon.
- Sooooooo...(.364 oz X 140 gallons) = 50.96 oz. Divide that by 8 oz to get the total cups and you get 6.4 cups.

Still works out the same...lol!

I can't do the math  but I am curious.... sillly question, but are you thinking of dumping the salt directly into the tank? Hope not..

Id just use salt water for top off till its where you want it. Mines a little low so your fish should acclimate fine :) Ill toss in a few frags for you as well.
