Salinty on liverock?

Hi rc. I have a bunch of liverock from another tank I broke down and it is sitting in a brute trash can with powerheads and heaters. How does everyone keep the salinity level? I cannot set up an ato on the trashcan. When I checked today it was 40ppm even after tossing a red solo cup of rodi water ever day. Any advise?

Just try to keep it close to the right level and add a little water for evaporation. It's not critical on just rock. The rock will be o.k. when you put it in your tank.

Is it covered?
Mark a level on the inside were you want your water level to be. Then adjust your salinity to what you want. Then every few days add RODI to bring the water back to that level line. Since it's only rocks, if it varies a little it will be fine.

Yeah, salinity isn't absolutely critical to keep at any certain level if you've just got rock. If you keep the level in the can approximately the same, you're fine.

What you are aiming to do is provide the optimal environment to support the life on the rock.

That being said, most reefers prefer to keep their water salinity at 1.023-1.026

I keep mine at 1.025 just to be the happy medium


Remember, the rock itself does nothing. It is the vastness of life within the rock that does all the work.
