Sally lightfoot crab

I bought a sally lightfoot few months ago, mainly to control my bryopsis. He/she didn't do squat but has grown to a pretty big crab. Now I read that it can also become carnivorous when bigger and able to eat small fish.
Anybody has experience with them. I would like to have a few peppermint shrimps but I am afraid it will be lunch for Sally.
Don't know what to do, to catch sally will be impossible.

Sally was the single worst thing I have ever put in my tank. I finally ended up tearing the tank down to get the bugger. Good luck, Probably not what you want to hear.

Sally light foot is the devil my lfs said they are reef safe she was for about a year then started eating all my mushrooms I also had to pull all my rock out to get here you can try the jar trick some people have had luck with that. Good luck

I have never heard of a Sally doing anything for algae of any type. All I've seen and heard was them killing fish and inverts.. We had to make a spear out of a shiksabob stick and pen tube to rid my friends 240 of one. The LFS store sold it to him knowing it was going in a reef and said it was a good scavenger.. Yeah of any fish that it saw Lol.. Good luck. I would get it out ASAP before its WW3..

Holy Crap!
I did not expected such rage and hate towards Sally, AHHH, now I know why my shrooms are dwindling, they were doing so great in my nanocube before RSM and theSLFC!
Anybody has an idea what trap is the best, don't know if I can use that speargun on him, he is so skittish I cannot come close to getting him in the open.
How you set up the jartrick, Dan K? to prevent him from walking back out.

Hey paul, set the jar at an angle against the liverock and use somefood for bait, the crab can get in but because the glass is smooth it won't be able to crawl back out.good luck

thanks, snakeman!
I'll see if I can catch him. with comments like breaking down the tank from gone fishing he might be smarter than a jar
Sounds like there are a lot of horror stories out there, would like to hear them!

Good thread nano I didn't know they were that evil either that probably explains the disappearing mushrooms and two small clowns.

That happened to you , lost 2 clowns?
I was thinking in getting Banggai cardinals or PJ cardinals, wonder if they will make it. see I am not 100% sure if mine has made the transition from vegetarian to omnivorous. He is just big. And if he is a vegan he is not very good at it. I still have to pluck all the algae out.

I tried the jar trick for a couple weeks. No luck in my case. I caught everything else at least twice LOL. I only had the 55 at that time. He was very fast so I finally just pulled the rock out and created a god awful sand cloud chasing him around. I nearly resorted to my shotgun LOL

Cardinals are great if you have a calm, boring tank. I am no longer a fan of these Debby Downers.

How did you end up getting rid of him?:headwallblue:

I ended up cornering him with a couple pieces of plexiglass for a wall and the wife grabbed him with a net finally. This was after all the rock was out put the fish and other livestock in my quarantine tank. Let the sand settle back down did some water changes in case I kicked up a cycle from the sand moving around. Luckily things got back to normal pretty quick. There is not much meat on a lightfoot like a king crab LOL.

whew, I don't think I am ready to break up my tank yet. My chilipepper montipora has fused some of the rocks together. I think I'll try put some small fish in there and see what happens.
BTW , did you put salt and pepper on it? LOL
thanks for the help

I am going to put a tall vase with narrow middle in the tank tomorrow, harder to crawl out. No roses. Probably will catch a lot of bristleworms...
