salt evaporated!

So I understand that only water evaporates and can increase the salt in the water that is left .. but I am seeing salt crystals forming around the rim of the tank and on the hood.. should I put it back into the tank or clean it off?

That's called salt creep, if I find a large piece I'll throw it in the sump. Is there a lot of splashing going on in that area?

Its probably from splashing water or something similar. If salt evaporated we'd have salty rain etc"¦ As for putting it back in - I think the right answer is yes, but I am not certain.

I agree. Based on the location, seems very likely.

It doesn't have to be from big splashes, either. Your HOB likely makes tiny droplets that settle on parts of your tank, then evaporate.

+1 on tossing it back in. Won't hurt anything, though it may annoy corals until it dissolves if it lands on them so I'd try to make sure it lands in an unpopulated spot.
