salt for a 20000l reef pool

I want to make a large reef pool in my backyard where it will receive full sun and will be open to the elements.
My only concern is water changes.

Could I use pool salt and mix it with RO/DI , to make my
water changes.

Are you serious? The only way I think this would work if you live next to the ocean! If you were able to pump water directly in. Then I think you might have a chance. The other thing would be algae & Temperature problems!
Just my thoughts from keeping regular fresh water ponds for many years.
Thanks Mark

There are people who have done this in the past, I have seen a few threads. I would use standard aquarium salt though, it needs to still match the ocean even if it's in your backyard.

Well you have a noble idea. But I gotta recommend that you read, read, and read some more about coral husbandry if it wasn't clear to you a long time ago that you can't use regular pool salt to make salt water. And then of course, price out the project. The sand and/or rock alone to fill a 5000 gallon pool would be $1000's alone.

What about the winter? Gets too cold...

What about the summer? A shallow pond in open sun will reach into the high 90s easily.

And you couldn't just use ocean water to top off either. Would get way too saline. You would also have to have a massive chiller to combat the heat from the sun.

Money is not a concern.
The pool will be 4m long , 3m wide , 2m height. (24000L)
For cooling I will be running the water pipes that lead to the filter, skimmer and other equipement under ground so the cool soil cools the water, I will also Have a shade colth for days of extreame heat.

I am going to have a sliding Acrilic cover over the pool when it rains.
Would it be okay for me to use rainwater that just fell from the sky to top off my reef pools evaporated water.

sounds pretty crazy. what is 20,000l in gallons? like.. 5,300?

I think it could work if you can keep up with topping off and keeping the temperature in line... i mean, coral farms are outside but i guess they do pump water in from the ocean. maybe if you had a sump and big freakin' auto top off system to keep the parameters more stable. the sump could be in a cool location too to help keep temps down. just a thought.

give us a link to the build thread when you start it!

you are going to need one hell of a chiller... i don't think that just running the pipes underground will keep it cool enough... JMO

If money is not a concern, then i would suggest a commercial refrigeration unit.

Oh, and a unicorn to pull the magical flying truckloads of Synthetic sea salt.

I would really like to see this happen, I cannot recommend using rainwater for top offs. If you do this, I hope we can see a build thread??
