I have a 90 gal FOWLR 60lbs of live rock. My salt level is 1.021 I'm not sure if it's to low and if it is what is the easiest way and less stressful way on the fish to raise it?? thanx in advance:D

I would just use saltwater for topoff or do a water change with slightly higher salinity. I'm not sure about the effects of 1.021, but i think you would be better off with at least 1.023. I keep my tank at 1.025.

In the long run the fish will be better off with a specific gravity similar to their natural environment which is about 1.025. In order for hyposalinity to successfully prevent most parasitic infections the SG would need to be kept at 1.009 or lower (treatment for crypto/Ich) which causes liver and kidney damage if used for prolonged periods.

I have to say that there are all kinds of speculations on what is best for our fish for in my main tanks are reef and eel tanks only and I keep the salinity at 1.026.

As most of us know that our lfs keep their tanks with F/O at 1.019 and corals and so around 1.023.

Now for the fish I will get for my reef tanks, I be keeping my 40 breeder/QT at 1.021 for as also if your a person who is in good standing with your lfs person, then he or she not would mind that the fish of your chosen be held there at the store, a time period to where you are comfortable with to in how long the fish would remain at their store.

I have to believe that this is one the main problems with peoples fish becoming sick because most you have to buy your fish the very next day and this really in my mind causes our fish further stress.

The thing with eels on this is that it takes weeks or months sometimes to know what you got if it eats or not for when it comes to eels, the sooner one gets their eel, the sooner it can become adjusted to it`s new surroundings.

So we all have ideas in what might be best for our fish, but also my fellow hobbyists is that we all not have the exact same level of success in this madder. For some will agree and disagree for also I keep any new arrivals for not less then eight weeks in the QT and yes, if I had need to use medications, that fish be in the QT for a much longer period.

I cannot see keeping a tanks salinity level at 1.009 or lower as one said here, that has to be quite stressful, is it not?

I was not suggesting that ANYONE keep a display tank with an SG of 1.009 rather I was commenting on the commonly held belief that an SG of 1.021 has a major impact on parasites in marine tanks.

As for why stores keep the salinity low... economics. Less salt = less money spent on tank maintenance. Plus, stores do not plan on keeping fish for more than a couple of weeks at the most so it is believed that any possible negative impact from the lower salinity will be negligible.

Monkeyfish, The reasons are really quite simple in why lfs do keep an average salinity of 1.019 for they cannot prevent all the new arrivals form getting ich, but it could however prevent it from spreading quickly.

Most their live stock are sold in the first 48 hrs if not few days, very few fish stay a few weeks.

But LFS want to sell their live stock as soon as they can, the very next day if at all possible.
