Salt prices

Print out the price for any of the salts on PetSmarts website and take it in to the store. They will honor that price and you don't have to pay any shipping! Saves a ton of money.

I typically get the IO. It's going for 31.99 currently. Might want to call first to make sure they have it in stock. Other members might have cleared out the one closest to you. (Not me!....this time) Hehe. Good luck tracking some down.

Just checked their website.

Has anybody tried Oceanic(TM) Natural Sea Salt Mix??

200 gal bucket for only 8 bucks more.

Is it ok to go from I/O 's reef crystals to just the plain I/O or even for the matter to go from the I/O to say the Oceanic like Partagas just mention'd ??

Also it's Fish only, and doing a MAJOR water change.

When changing salt brands, it's best to start small and gradually work towards a 100% switch. An instant switch could throw the whole tank off and cause a crash. If you do a search here you can find horror stories of people that had just this happen. So I would start by just adding a little bit of the new salt to a solution of your old salt for the first water change, and gradually increase the concentration of the new salt brand. I'd say within 5-6 water changes (don't hold me to that number......*not responsible clause*) you should be able to switch over completely.

Did Dr. F&S get rid of their extra charge for shipping salt? That might be a good way to go if they did.

If you ask Chris, he had a problem going to Tropic Marin. And supposedly other people had the same problem, so I'd stay away from that brand all together.

I've been using the instant ocean reef crystals, but I wanted to go to the regular instant ocean in the 160gal bucket....

whats the difference? more trace elements or something ?

Dr. F&S did get rid of the excess freight charge. Also- they have their refractometers on sale for $40- $15 off!
I've heard the oceanic can be inconsistent. I started my new tank with it, and used it in DC when it first came out. Only did 10% water changes. One thing I don't like about IO- but Im using it now, is that it makes my corals slime when doing a water change. Oceanic never did.

The switch from reef crystals to IO should not be any problem at all. They are almost identical salts.

Lots of people have had problems with salt changes when doing big ones of different brands. I really don't think it will matter in a fo- but don't have any experience to be honest.
