Salt Question

Thirsty
Anyone have a thread of different salt mixes and the parms? I need to figure out what salt to use and I know there have been extensive tests on all the different salts on the market. Let me know.

Thanks,
J

Ya, I skimmed through that (those numbers are from over a year ago?). I did my own tests and I'm using Red Sea Coral Pro and the dKH is 13-14? It spikes my system every week after a WC.

you may be asking the impossible. every batch is going to turn out different for everybody. some people use tap water, some ro, some ro/di. some people need to change their filters. some salt mixes are not evenly mixed up in the bucket. the chances that 2 people that use the same salt and have perfectly matching parameters is going to be pretty low. there are numerous reports that a lot of salt mixes have wiped out tanks because the mix has been off so badly. you should really test your own w/c water and adjust accordingly or change salt mixes. even the salt studies out there have wildly differing measurements of the same salt brands. the salt issue will never go away. it is trial and error at best.

I have used Turbo calcium or cal chloride to drop my dKH and I guess I can try that. I don't mind the ca going up higher than the dKH. It's really frustrating?

i hear you. at the cost we pay for some of this stuff, you would think that you are getting a great product. most of the time it's true. check out melevs reef dot com and go to his log page. he just wrote a quick article about this exact issue. i think the log date is july 29th.

I also use Reef Crystals.

When I tried to adjust the batch of new saltwater, things tend to precipitate out.

So I balance the tank after each water change.

Usually I just add Mg.
