salt Recommendations

What salt is the best to use..im new and locally i can get instant ocean and coralife..
i would have to order online to get anything else..

what do you recommend..i plan on eventually having a reef tank.

I personally like Oceanic. But I'm still cycling my first tank.

I imagine its just the shiny silver.

Well i dont know if there really is a great salt water mix. I think that the water you add is probobly more important than the salt mix. i personally use Oceanic.

I read it some where in this board before; saying that you should use something that you can also buy locally. That way you won't have problem getting your type of salt during an emergency.

Russianpimp123 is right and wrong. The water you add to the tank is very important. He's wrong when he says it's more important than the salt mix. That just plain old doesn't make sense. The salt mix is what makes the water SALTWATER. Thus, the salt needs to be of good quality to make quality saltwater. I'm fairly new to the hobby, but I have 6 months of flawless results and anything in my tank that seems problematic (i.e. cyanobacteria breakout) is actually part of the tank maturing process. BTW, my cyanobacteria went away. I use Kent Marine Sea Salt. I highly recommend it. I might actually switch to Tropic Marin Sea Salt after I finish my current Kent Marine 5 gal bucket of salt (makes up to 200 gals. of water). I can purchase it from thatpetplace.com for like $68 for a 5 gal bucket. $68 is not that bad of a price. Salt mix is very important in water quality because some mixes contain nitrates and phosphates which can lead to cyanobacteria and other nuisance algae.

I will have to strongly disagree with you.

The water we use in our tanks is the backbone, basis, and overall quality of life for our tanks. Russianpimp is not wrong when he says water is more important than salt, in fact he's dead right on. Kent salt is a very good salt to use (I use it religiously) and if I were to mix that with treated tap water, it still makes that salt as good as the tap water. If you spray poop with really good perfume, you still have poop that just smells a little better. Yes, using a good quality salt makes it all the better but you have to have good water for the salt to be good. Even if you are using a not so good salt mix, most people dose things like Alk and Calcium to bring those levels back to par.

Water quality is the upmost important element for your tank.
