Salt

I always get mine at Emerald Bay. 40 bucks tax included is insanely cheap. Its not worth it to save 5 bucks for me. But if you really want to save the 5 bucks I am sure Sean would order a bunch for the club at that price. You should know when he does that he makes nothing. Im not sure that he makes anything of consequense at 40 bucks, he just sells it to get people in the store to see all the other stuff like livestock, corals, etc.

Has anyone ever used aquamedic salt? I have been talking to some people with larger tanks and they claim it is better then IO due to the higher ph and calcium?

I noticed that when I mixed up mine. I used 2 1/4 a cups for 5 gallons of water & luckily came out at a ph of 8.3.

what S.G. did you come up with mixing the 2 1/4 cups?

I have had bad luck with Instant Ocean. I was one of the unlucky ones to get one of the buckets from the bad batch they had a few years ago. Things started going downhill so what did I do? More water changes! Well, the more water I changed the worse it got. I finally made the connection and tested my water change water. The alkalinity was so high it was off the charts on my test kit! With the non-bad batches it seemed like I had to be more dilligent to keep the levels stable in my tank with it for some reason. I don't have anything against them, I think there are a lot of varables in tank and maintenence practices that have an affect also.

I have used several different kinds of salt but my last bucket was the coral pro from AC and it seems to be working well.

i was gonna ask the same question because i usually come up with somewhere between 1.024-1.026 and acording to the directions that IO gives it says it should be at 1.022 when measuring it this way but other people say they come up with it being higher like me .

I come up with 1.025 with 2 1/4 cups in a 5 gallon bucket.

I like it thought, I run my salinity at 1.025 and my temp at 74.

I am looking into getting some aquamed salt I will check if any of the LFS carry it but I have found a place to get it for $38 for a 240 gal bucket at least he thinks it 240 I am not sure he is converting the L to gal right as I looked at there web page and it shows 750L.
Here is a link:

I will order a pallet which is 33 buckets. If anyone is interested let me know as I may have to get two palletts. Some of you may have seen my brothers tank and he is using this salt.

Your brothers tank looks awsome! With a tank as big as you are planning cost is an issue I would think! How many gallons do you plan on changing at a time?

Its right in the middle of 1.024 & 1.025. Which is where I keep it anyway cause of having to top off the nano everyday.

Well after looking at the charts and reading the studies one thing is for sure none of the salts have it all and I think you have to pick your poison and see how it reacts to the type of system you are running. I do think it is funny how some of these salts have such high price tag and the test show that they are no better then the others. You also have to watch who does the study as I can make numbers say anything I want them too. I will try the AM since my brother has been using it for a while and gets great growth. I may also at some point try a different't salt in one of the other tanks.

eyebedam, have you tested the calcium in the coral pro salt? When I mixed 5 gallons. I only came up with around 320 whcih I thought was low. Maybe its my cheap test kit, API. I was only showin' like 340 with reef crystals. I figured those salts would test higher. My brother got the same results testing the coral pro with his red sea kit. Said it was around 320 too at 1.023 S.G.

It's still $40 tax included for a 200 gallon box for club members crumbletop (just picked some up). That's cheaper than online, even without shipping. I don't see how they could go any lower.

They did a large purchase last year right about this time, and it was around $32/box or so. $40 is good too. Did they have much in stock?

Is any one interested in the AM salt at $38 a 240 gal bucket? I am ordering a Pallet now but if there was much interest I will be getting 2 Pallets I will need 6-8 buckets to start my system.:bum: :bum:

Yeah, the $40 for 200 gallons of IO mix is a great price. I'll see if I can pick up some boxes today. I don't have my 2007 membership card, so hopefully that won't be an issue.

Eyebedam, what I do with the bags of mix is I have a 160 (I think) gallon bucket of IO with the screw-on lid. I dump the bags of IO mix into the bucket whenever the bucket runs out. That way I don't have any unopened bags that could turn into rock. Works great for me.
