Hello everyone!

I am interested in getting a dwarf seahorse and dwarf Octopus. I'm quite fascinated by both, but I have never had one of either, nor have I ever had saltwater fish! So if I am off to a bad start, I'd like to know. (:

If I am off to a bad start, what type of fish should I start off with for saltwater?

Guppies are my freshwater specialty...

Thanks! ☺

Well.. both of those creatures are up there on the difficult/expert care level scale..

If you are willing to do the work and put in the time researching/learning,etc... you can certainly achieve your "dream" though..

Agree with above. Both require specific tank setups to achieve a longterm sustainable environment. Neither of those choices are on the easier side, but it is possible.

Both quite delicate requiring near perfect water always.
Big challenge, I would start with something more forgiving but that's me

Oh...you made me remember my dwarf octopus...I gave it to my LFS for a crab, a shy shrimp and 5G of RO water....:sad2:

Like what starting fish would you suggest? I'm willing to work for it and put money into it.

Go for what you want. Just dont rush. Nothing in this hobby happens over night, and if it does its because someone forced something and didnt wait and there are usually dire consequences for that.

Get good equipment if your going to be getting into high end livestock / corals.

Research everything.
Plan everything on paper, then dry fit it, then go for it.

Thank you. :)

I just don't know what fish to start with, there are so many different sites telling me different things. I'd rather start with something simple to learn how to properly take care of a saltwater tank.

Any idea's on a starter fish?

I've always wanted to keep seahorses since I was younger. Finally getting into the SW side of the hobby, but I started with a fish/coral tank and I'll see how that goes before finally, hopefully keeping seahorses.

Octopus lives very short, not so great pets.
The bobtail squid seem less prone to excape the tank.

Seahorses should be done without adding other fishes first.
If you want seahorses, go for seahorses, they just need special habitat and peace and lots of tiny foods that you have to give them constantly.

Enjoy, good luck and hurry slow, as most beginner mistakes just happens because it is hard to be patient with such amazing things as hosting saltwater lifeforms.

What size tank? ;)

Look/read/learn here..

Note the "marine fish for beginners" category too..

Find something YOU like.. Don't decide based on anyone elses opinion/likes.. Its your tank
I will almost never suggest a fish or coral,etc... when people ask..
Just like I don't tell you how to arrange your closet or what car to buy or what color underwear to put on.. ALL YOU... :)
