Sand bed in a refugium

Is sand necessary in a refugium? I have 2 inches and was wondering is no sand but more rock with growth would be better?

I like the refug with sandbed. It gives you more diversity to have more tiny animals in the fug. Certain ones flourish with a sand bed.

no sand is not needed.

growth? of what the chaeto. it wont matter. pods live in the chaeto anyway so sand wont help much.

i ran 2"sand for 2 years when i ditched it the detritus i pulled out was rediculous. after 2 weeks the bottom of my fuge is covered in detritus in a lightly stocked tank i syphon it out, without the BB the detritus would just be in the sand
