sand beds

I have beeen taking care of my son's salt water tank, I would like to start my own. Do I have to have sand and live rock? What else can I use in place of sand and rock?

Depends in you are doing a fish-only, fowlr, or reef. The live rock is considered the primary filtration source in many cases. There are plenty of people who do bare-bottom tanks. I personally have a deep sand bed for nitrate reduction.
