Im pretty new, so not 100% this is the right forum so dont kill me if its not :eek2:

Im orignally from CA and have alot of cool memories of sanddollars, i was just wondering if it was possible/advisable to keep live sanddollars in a reef tank. and if it was if anyone new the requirements to do such a thing.

Ive never seen anyone with sanddollars in a tank before...living ones anyway and even google turned up very little.

Thanks for any info guys.

Not 100% positive but I don't think these would work in a home reef. I have never seen them for sale at a LFS. I think I read that they are fragile and have very specific diets like some of the sea stars.

If you set up a species tank for them, it can be done....but then they aren't terribly interesting creatures.

For the tropical one's, the substrate size must be pretty specific - some even need silicious over calcareous substrate. They need a deep sand bed, and burrow into it. So you don't really see them. Most will not survive long in our systems.

They probably won't work because: (1) temperature is way too high and (2) you probably don't have a huge tank with a good size deep sand bed.
They need a lot of food that is found only there. And judging by their feeding habits, you can't really target feed them directly.

Where are you located now? Are there no interesting tropical inverts located near you?

im located in eastern Oklahoma...dont get much more land locked then that. we have a couple stores but none carry a large supply or selection of inverts. gotta goto 3 stores just to get a few snails for my clean up crew.
