Sand for my refugium

Im setting up a refugium for my tank, to keep some macro algae in. My question is if this kind of sand setup is suitable. I was going to put down a few inches of sand box sand, which is very fine, and then some bigger arganite sand on top. (the 20 pound bags you find at the pet store) Would this be suitable for growing plants in. My concern was that the fine sand would compact and the plant roots wouldn't be able to grow, but I was also told this would be better for anaerobic bacteria.. So if this good or can I do better? Thanks

I would be pretty careful about using play ground sand...many of these products have toxins and either way definately rinse the sand very well
