Its only been 7-8 years since I've bought sand, so the brand slips my mind. What is the sand from Lowes that will work in an aquarium? Short Mountain Play Sand? or was it quikrete play sand?
It was South Down Play sand... And if I recall correctly.... It's rather hard to find these days. There isn't anyone who stocks this sand anymore. Check with fellow hobbyists as some still have bags laying around.
I couldn't find southdown when I setup my current tank 5 years ago... used whatever sand home depot had... no issues to date. It is very fine though and does blow around a bit giving me some valleys and covering corals if I'm not careful. I'm switching to a larger tank in a couple of weeks and going with normal aragonite aquarium sand just to get some coarser material.
The white sand is called Kolorscape and you can find it at Kmart, usually sitting on a pallet right out front. It wont become available until spring though. And i use it in my tank and havent had too much of a problem with it blowing all over but i also mixed it with crushed shells and whole shells. It is cheap and it works fine for me. If you do decide to use take my advice and wash it very well. Washing it will also help eliminate the smaller particles too.
