Can you use sand from the ocean in an aquarium?

depending on where you get it it can be full of pollutants and contain unwanted inverts for a mixed reef tank.

according to some, a few miles off shore for reasons the cap'n points out, and even then... You may also run afoul of collecting laws and regulations. it's really not that expensive to buy substrate material packaged for the purpose and seed it with live sand from a fellow reefer or other trustworthy source. not worth the risk to your system or your attorney ;)

Yep.. watch it. Some guy around my area got 5 years for taking a coral and some live rock.

Bill: what ya in for?
reefer: tell me what you're in for first
Bill: I robbed a bank
reefer: I went diving and took a rock

now.. doesn't that sound silly? lmao

Where I live you can collect sand. Not sure bout diving. However I live in OC where all the sand is disgusting. I took some not even thinking and when I put it in the tank my protein skimmer went crazy and the sand was black.

I think there is a little bit of embellishment here;)
I do believe there is a hefty fine however.

Thanks everybody for the replies.

My family went fishing in Beaufort today and I was thinking ,since I was out there, that if I saw a good place I would get some sand. Well after researching it last night I decided not to. It was 50/50 on rather it was a good idea or not.

I was just frustrated because the sand I ordered last week from the LFS was the wrong kind. Then they said they couldn't get what I wanted which is Tahitian Black Moon sand. If they had called I would have ordered from drs foster & smith. My impatients(sp) was not worth risking my babies.

Anyhoo...has any one ever used the black moon sand or know of another kind of good black sand?

Thanks,
Candy
