Sand in Overflow Question

I am having someone clean up and get my tank maintenance done as I have not had time lately due to work.
I have two overflow boxes that are full of sand. I have not much worried about it as I did not think it hurt anything and has been like that for years. He wants to vacuum it out and clean them. Is there any benefit to not touching it or any benefits to cleaning it out?

I haven't ever had sand in an overflow. It needs to be in the sump or dt.

The sand in the overflow won't hurt anything providing it doesn't inhibit the water draining. Being that it has been this way for years I don't see a issue with it
