Sand Never Settled....What Now?

If you are going to change the sand then Id suggest you get plain old Caribsea Agramax sand, not live sand.

Also once you get it, cut 1/4 of the bag from the top and slowly lower the open bag with the sand into the tank. Make sure you keep the bag closed with your hands as you lower. Once you place it at the bottom, slowly begin to release the sand. I suggest this is because its better to dump sand from the bottom of the tank rather from the top. It will cloudy for sure but since the sand have larger particles than playsand it will perfectly clear in an hour or so.

Also the thing about playsand is that they might not be calcium carbonate based. I dont know about lowes standards, but Southdown is the best option if you want to go for cheap playsand. But then again if $$ isnt an issue then the right SW hobby sand is recommended.

Wow Envy07,

very nice tut on how to pour sand! I would have never thought about techniques involved in doing it!!! I certainly will follow it.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

Oh yeah also remmeber to drain 1/4 of the tank water into a storage container. You know displacement once you put in something as large as a bag filled with sand into a tank full of water. An overflow is bound to happen :p luckily for me I had an overflow drain that allowed the water to fall into the sump

Another way to add sand with little to no storm is to get a pc. of PVC pipe with a funnel at the top. Now you can direct where you want the sand to go and pour it in slowly enough to avoid sandstorms for the most part.

if there is already water in the tank...

when i put in the sand, I wash the bag off tith RO water really well, wipe it down.

put the bag of sand in the tank resting flat on the bottom (obviously with a slightly lowered water level)

then use a razor blade to cut vertically down the center of the bottom of the bag.
fold the bag bag together slowly like a hot dog bun.

seems to work really well for me.

on the new tank i just started i was having a lot of issues with silt because i didn't rinse my sand first, and its the sugar size sand, which I hadn't used before. SO it has been cloudy for about 4 days. then i found some filter media laying around and i just put it between the baffles on my sump. in a few hours i could finally see the back of the tank.
