Sand Question

As you guys know I'm almost ready to switch out the 100 gal for a 135. The tanks have the same footprint so I was going to use the sand from the 100 gal...

Should I wash the stuff out or just dump it into the new tank? If I wash it should I wash it with saltwater or RODI?

How old is the sandbed? If it is more than a year old, I would clean it thoroughly with tap water over and over and then soak it in RODI water for a couple days. If the sandbed is new, then you might get by putting it straight in, but there is risk involved with adding nutrients or other nasties that have accumulated.

Either way a new tank will go through a cycle. I have done moves and didn't rinse the sand. I would stirr it up a bit a try to suck up that water to get rid of the nasty stuff somewhat. But wouldn't go crazy at it. IMO I wouldn't rinse with new water neither R/O nor SW.

Or do what Dave said he was faster at it than I was.

your sandbed is not very deep in your old tank right? why don't you just loose it all together?

I was thinking about buying 30 pounds of new stuff but then again I would like to save the old stuff since half of it was stolen my be from the Keys... I'm attached to my sand lol.

Tank was set up last June I think...

I re-used some sand from a big tank to fill a small tank. I had major issues with nusiance algaes. Hair and red slime. Took longer than expected to get through that part of the cycle.

So don't reuse unless I wash it to "like new?"

That may have been the issue last time I moved my tank. Went from a 76 to a 100 gal and used the same sand and the whole tank was dead...
