My only recommendation would be to match the size of the particles to the amount of flow you want. Otherwise It's just personal preference for the color.
I usually caribsea brand sands for my tanks. The ideal size for most people would be the 2mm grain which I think is called seafloor. I find this sand stays put and looks reasonably bright under most lights.
