sand sifting star

anyone had any luck with the sand sifting stars?? Was thinking about getting one some day but was wondering what peoples experiences with them have been.

Generally they are harmless towards fish, corals and other invertebrates.
But if you run a DSB just know that these starfish feed upon many of the organisms within the sand bed that help with denitrification.

Sand sifting stars generally starve to death in about a year or so. It takes a well established large sand bed to support these.

If you really want a star I would suggest a brittle or a serpent. Good Luck!!!

really I have had mine for a year and a half in a 29 with about 1 inch of sand and it is growing and very fat

Some people do seem to have success with the sand sifters. I honestly hope yours continues to thrive!!!!:)

Alot of people assume their having success. Then one day the arms start to fall off, and by that time it's usually too late to save them. Thats why I always suggest brittle or serpent stars, they have a much better long term survival rate.

I have had a sand sifter for about 1.6 to 2 years. no problems. does a good job keeping the sand clean. I do feed daily so I am sure this has helped.

he eats what ever he can find in the sand. I think the key is to have a big enough tank for him to find food
