Im new to the Reef Tank. I was wondering if someone could help me. I was wondering if you had coursely crushed coral if you could use sand stars to keep it cleaned up?

good ? i know that you need a big tank and a deep sand bed for sand sifting stars and a established tank too, i had one and my 135 was not enough for him and he slowly starved and died, snails and hermit crabs do a good job, i dont think a goby would like crushed coral(great fish by the way), good luck

Take stucco and sunfish's advice. Stick with livestock that your system can keep healthy. No amount of wishing/justifying can change straightup facts.

Most people go against them. Mine does a great job of keeping the sand clean. I have had it for several months without it starving.

SS stars are destined to die in almost all tanks. It takes a while but they will be slowly starving and you won't be able to tell until it begins to literally fall apart, losing its legs and dieing. They eat micro fauna in your sand bed and their diet can not be supplemented. Take it back to the LFS for trade before it does damage to your tank and dies.

They're another creature that should not be sold in this trade. I guess they must be plentiful and easy to catch though so they keep showing up for sale.

It takes about 6 months for them to starve and fall apart.
