sand vacuuming

Good morning,
I am not certain whether siphoning the sand is intended to remove detritus alone, or also the very top layer of the sand itself. if some sand is included, do I toss the it away?

Yes some vacuum the sand just to remove any detritus,etc..
Others just leave it alone..

But yes.. if you suck some up.. just throw it down the drain with the rest of the old water,etc..
