Im curious about something. Ive got a well established tank with live sand. I want to add more sand but not really pay $30 for a bag. Could a person just use regular sand like play sand to add to your tank.
In general its best to avoid play sand which is often a "silica" based sand which can cause long term diatom growth issues.
"Saltwater" sands are aragonite/calcium carbonate based typically..
If adding sand to an existing tank I HIGHLY recommend "dry" sand vs "live sand" and rinse it very well prior to SLOWLY pouring it into the tank.. You will likely want to run a filter sock or other mechanical filtration for a few days after to help with the cloud that will happen from the sand fines..
