Sand

Hello new to the forum and considering building a reef tank. I've read alot of articles on different types of sand from regular QuickCrete play sand to a sand called OldCastle. Does anyone use a different type of sand other than the live sand sold around here in LFS that costs an Arm & Leg to fill up your tank with? If so were did you get it ?

Hello and Welcome to the forum BrianOKC. If you are just getting started, you came to the right place. First thing you should do is go to one of the COMAS meetings and meet everyone. I was a COMAS member before i moved to Florida, and it is the one thing i miss about Oklahoma lol. It's a great bunch of people with tons and tons of information, and helpfull people to keep you from having to learn the hard way and save you a ton of money. The club has a frag trading program, library, a stock of items that don't get used much for you to borrow in emergencies, and an endless supply of information. The frag program alone is worth 10X the annual dues.

Here is the COMAS club info and website to get you started.

As for the sand, play sand is just fine. Someone in the club may be able to help you find some southdown or old castle sand. Then you can just get a cup or 2 of good live sand from the club to seed your tank with, and save a ton of money.

thanks for the quick answer dugg. Only one correction. Our new website is www.mycomas.com

Brian, welcome to the forum and we'd love to have you join the club too. You can find out more about the club benefits at our website or in the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

We have a meeting tonight and you should come if you can. You don't have to join tonight if you want a chance to check us out first, but the meeting should be good. Look for directions in this thread:

Brian,
I would suggest you purchase caribsea aragonite sand. Go for the fine stuff. Ideally you want about 3 inches of sand in your tank, unless you are running a sump as well, then 2 in the main tank and about 5 or 6 in the sump.

It costs about $35 for 40lbs at most of the local stores.
Do not buy the wet "live sand" it is pretty much a con and is the same as dry sand with a cup of old tank water in it.

Once you get ready to put sand give us a shout and someone will give you a cup of sand from one of our tanks to seed it with life.

Paul.
