sand

How deep is the sand bed? Do you see any bubbles in it? Does it look like it is alive or active at all?

If not go to LFS and get some more LS to recharge your micro fauna. DSB greater than 2" thick should never be replaced and you should never disturb it, just add a bit now and then to keep the variety of "critters" up. DSB do not go bad, only reef owners go bad.

I have had mine for 4 years now but every 6 to 8 months I use a rigid tubing to syphon out some water from the deeper parts (It comes out very dirty) That seems to extend it's useful life and reduce the chances of Cyano. I have a Refugium I assume helps replensih the critters on the main.
