Sand

I am upgrading my 54 corner bow to a 120 .The 54 has a 5-6 inch sand bed that has been in use for about 4 years. I want to some how use the sand in the refugium for the new tank.
How far down would you scoop the sand ?

a couple cups off the top 2-3 inches should work fine as seed stock
