hi everyone. Im looking for enough sand to cover my 210gallon project with about 2 inches all they way around. dosent have to be live sand but i would like it to be reef related sand. if anyone knows anywhere that i can get some and if anyone knows around how many lbs it would take to cover my tank with that much please let me know. thanks

The cheapest way is to get aragonite or crushed-limestone sand that's not marketed for aquariums, assuming it's not tainted with anything that's not reefsafe. Search the forums for "southdown sand". mflamb is probably the resident expert =) Other than that the local fish stores charge 1$/lb for caribsea aragonite sand and online maybe it's 50 cents a pound plus shipping.

got any local stores that carry southdown? otherwise i guess its off to finding it online as i don't need sand coming out of a reef tank since i wont have this monster set up for a while...just looking for some info. any online site that sell it? thanks

Hang on until you need it. I know others that are setting up larger tanks in the future. We'll do another "big buy" and you can get it for 50 cents per pound delivered to your door.

sweet im game for that...how long until you think this group buy will take place? let me know

Thanks

Hi Mark, I'm going to be in the market for about 500lbs in about two to three months. I'm going to be setting up a 240-280g in late summer early fall time frame. I'm not sure if that is your time frame or not, if it is we could get a big order.

hmm well i think i may be able to hold off that long. im working on getting all the pieces together first before i set it up. im looking at about 180lbs of sand for my tank. Anybody else in the market for sand do tell so on this thread so we can do a nice big group order.

i honestly dont know. i have personally never seen southdown sand at any hardware store like HD or Lowes. good question though because that could work for me to...so guys anyone got an answer?

thanks

Mark

I don't think we have the southdown around here (In the south). I'll be going with the stuff MFLamb and others purchased for their tanks. You have to be careful about the size of the gain, additives etc when getting sand from HD or Lowes. Like Mike said - if nothing else get it for 50 cents/lb delivered - not bad!
