When switching tanks.....is it better to keep the sand or start anew?

thanks,

Melenie,
I got rid of mine, only have just enough to barely cover the bottom. and love it that way...

<--- Not an expert, but...

Start new. Along with all of those cool critters in your old sandbed comes the nutrients as well.

Maybe take a few cups of the old bed to kick start the critters. Try to stay away from any sand that is black, which is usually lower or against your rockwork.

Thanks guys...for those of you that still use a sandbed.....do you still recommned the 5-6 inches?

Chuck, why only enough just to cover the bottom?

Last night I bought a tank from a guy who bought it and decided he couldn't put the time into it. It is a 180 and has 5 holes drilled in for a close loop--oceans motions kind of thing....I tell you, a 180 is muchhhhh heavier than a 125......

so the work has begun.....

Just for the looks, that's all .. the starboard that exposed is already covered in coralline don' t have any algae problems and I'm satisfied with my SPs growth.
I do have maybe 2 inches in my refugium along with Cheato which probably helps some.
My sand bed in my 55 was a PIA IMO. and a detris catcher even with tons of worms snails etc moving through it.

An inch or two of sand is all I would use, mostly for looks and for some critters like wrasses that may need to bury, otherwise most sand beds just become detritus collectors and nutrient sinks that eventually cause problems, especially if you have a high fish load. If you have a low bioload, then a deeper sand bed has its benefits, but as with anything reef there are no absolutes.
