Sandstorm question.

Hey Reefers,

So I added my sand yesterday morning. It's been about 36 hours and I still have this. Should I top up my system and start running my pumps, gyre and protein skimmer? Will it help clear it out? All the sand is now down but there is a layer of very fine sand on top of the more granny sand and I believe that is what's still floating around.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

The dust will settle when the particles acquire a bacterial coating and finally stick together and sink. If it is not live sand, did you wash it thoroughly? If you did not, you really should. [been there, got the tee shirt] because it creates a mess over time. Otherwise, just be patient and wait for bacteria.

The sand was pre washed and I did it give a rinse before putting it in the tank. I have a 40 lb bag of live sand still to add, should I add it now?

Yes, you should running your main pump, power heads and skimmer. Put the power head near the water surface to flow the floated dust to over flow box. Regularly stir your sand. These will help your water clear

What kind of sand are you usng?

I used regular sandbox washed sand, 3 bag and 1 bag of Caribsea Argalive.

Sand box sand is full of silicates. You will get an algae bloom from using sand box sand. Like others said, I would take it out and start over with reef sand.

If you are serious about this Hobby the best investment you can make is books, books and more books, this stuff takes dedication as these are some of the most difficult animals to keep, cheap does never cut it

Do what you want. But if it were me I wouldn't want a constant algae battle. Which you will get from using that sand. I'd start over and do it right the first time around. Now is the time to do this before you have a tank set up with corals and fish. It would suck to have to tear down from that point rather than now while you have a tank that isn't cycled yet.

Thank you for the input. I do appreciate it and will most probably take it out now.

Could I just remove the sand and then add proper argonite? Or do I have to drain the tank and change the water as well?

The sand doesnt bother me as it only cost me 18$ but it more the process of draining the tank and redoing all the RO/DI as it took me 2 days to fill the tank.

I also have about 50 lbs or Flordia crushed coral that I haven't used, would this be an option with a mix of live sand or not really recommenced?

Hopefully you haven't added you live rock or good sand?

My rock and good sand are in there as well. I'm going to scrap all the sand, nothing I can do about that now. Is my rock compromised? There is no way I'm getting rid of the rock as its so damn expensive.

The mistake doesn't bother me, it happens. Nor am I worried about the time. Just a pain in the butt to redo all the RO / DI is all.

I started draining it already. On my way to LFS for proper sand and new DI Resin.
