Sandstorm

I bought Southdown live sand and some LR from a couple who were getting out out of the hobby (new baby will be their new hobby) about a week ago and added it to my empty tank. Although the water has cleared some it is still very cloudy, as in you can't see the back wall of the tank, and there is a layer of silt all over the LR. There are some living zoas on the rock and a 'shroom that has not opened up. Water parameters are fine. How can I get my water to clear? I also need to know if and how to clean the rock.

Thanks.

You may want to check ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. After moving the tank you may be having a cycle and bacteria bloom from waste in the sand.

If those parameters check out the only answer is patience.

Good Luck,

Once the water clears you can blow the waste off the rock with a turkey baster or powerhead. It'll cloud the water but only for a short time.

I added the PS, LR last Weds and have been surprised to have not had any detectable levels of NH3 or NO2 so don't think it is a cycle. Plus you can see the silt on everything including the glass!

Patience is a virtue, I guess. :)

i used live aragonite with dry aragonite when setting my tank tank up on Dec 14, 2005. The tank is just now starting to clear. I do not understand it either. I have had saltwater for 8 years now. Never have I had a problem.

Looking Better! Plus, a question.

Looking Better! Plus, a question.

Good news!! My water is clearing up! It is still not crystal clear but looking much better! Now that I can see the whole tank I need/want to rearrange the rock and add some coral heads from my FO days in the 80's. I have a Magnum 330 canister filter (also from my FO tanks). What do you think about running it while I am rearranging? Would you run it in the sump or the tank? I have not added any livestock to my tank just the critters that came in the LR/LS. Thanks.
