Sargassum?

Thanks David!

Do you have any experiance with this species, or know of someone who does?

Also, for a fish that is supposed to originate from the Sargassum Sea, would the free-floating or anchored variety be best?

Thanks,

There have been a few threads about creating a floating sargassum biotope. I have no personal experience with sargassum, from what I've read it can be a tough one to keep. Grows like mad and then disappears. If you can get in touch with Gulf Coast they should be able to describe how they are keeping it.

I started some of the floating type a year and a half ago from a half inch cutting. It grew like a weed under 32 watts and continues to do so under 96 watts now. Although it is the floating type I have secured it by wedgeing it between rocks. It has never developed holdfasts though. The only minor irritation with it is that it drops leaves sometimes but they can be removed easily enough. HTH

It was kept under a 50/50 (10k/420nm) 32 watt PC with a 10 hour lighting period for just under a year. Now it is under the same type of light, just the 96 watt powerquad variety.

Did you get yours from Gulf Coast? If not, where, and if so, how was the service?

Any major problems in keeping/acclimating it at all?

Thanks,

The habitat you would be attempting to recreate would definitley be the floating, pelagic mats of this macroalgae. They harbor their own mini ecosystem of their own in the large drifts out at sea. Very interesting niche. :) Should be a cool tank.

On a side note, would a higher tank be better?

also, how should the LR be positioned?

and how much LR is needed? still the 1-1.5 per gallon idea?

Thanks,

I picked it up at a LFS. My acclimation involved me pulling it out of the bag and tossing it in the tank :-). I haven't had a problem with it, although you may want to trim it back now and again. For trimming I just decide what part I don't want any pull it off. I found this algae to be extremely hardy. Good luck

I just started dosing Randy's Two Part about a few months ago. Before that it was just NSW which measured at:

SG 1.025
pH 8.3
Ca2+ 370-400
Alk 7.3dKH

Now its still doing fine with:

SG 1.025
pH ~8.3
Ca2+ 450
Alk ~10dKH

Have pictures? What about a wavebox? I would be intrested in seeing a sargassum biotope with a wavebox. :D

Cheers

Does anyone know where I can legally obtain this seaweed for a FOWLR breeders tank? (connecticut, US)

Thanks,
i was just wondering why you asked if it be done legally? is it illegal in some places? if so what makes it so. just wondering because i have a ton of it growing in my tank. it came in as a hitchiker on a couple pieces of live rock.

I had previously seen some issue of legality on other sites, and I suspect it was kindof similar to liscence collecting vs. the avg. joe going out and grabbing a ton of it.

Who boy, on the subject of waveboxes!

(on a side note, the lack of a search option makes things overly difficult and tedious)

I have yet to see a diy plan that doesn't have some large issue such as motor life, or timer capabilities, and i have not been able to find this expensive tunze box everyone mentions (even checiked the tunze site)

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
