Save a Emperor Angel Please!!!!!

My local fish store has one that is about 6" and in it's adult colours. It was an amazing fish and looked incredible. The pet store owner got it from a trade in and looks like he didn't take good care of it. The fish has what looks like to be a serious case of ick. All his sides are covered in fine white spots.... looks almost like he's covered in white sand and his colours are very faded and not solid like before. His eyes look like they are clouded over aswell, like they have a white tint to them. This fish was for sale for $200 when it was healthy, although now it's in bad shape and I think he lowered the price to $100. This owner looked like he was ready to just cull the fish. Is there any good ways to really cure a fish like this from something like that, or is it too late???? because if he's going to just cull it maybe he'll give it to me for free just to see if I can get her going again. Anyone have any really good tips on treatment or any good sites for illness diagnosis and treatment????

i sure wouldnt pay a 100 or anything cloase to that for a sick fish, but if you could set up a qt tank and medicate him you could bring him back, ive seen some very sick fish come back and be healthy but it does take time, try and get him for free and save him

Set up a QT tank for him with hypo and feed formula 1 pellets if he eats it, supposedly it makes their color better, along with soaking whatever other food in a few drops of garlic xtreme and also feed the algae clips and maybe angel formula food.

I don't know that I would care to do business with any fish store that attempted to sell a visibly diseased fish. It keeps me out of every store in the area.

Edit: Oops, for got to finish. If they will give it to you, set up a QT tank (long types are good), and see what you can do. They apparently don't care to take the time or effort to do this.

If you can get him for less than 50 it'll be a steal. Treating shouldn't be that big of a deal if you have the patience. A copper dip and some time in QT will probably fix him for now. The only problem is that Emperors are notorious for getting ich.
I seriously doubt, however, that any lfs will let him go for that cheap. They'd probably rather see him dead than lose a penny.

AGAIN ask for it for FREE...The worst thing he can say is no...ALSO they are stores that give sick fish or stressed corals

Jsut my 2 pennies

ya my plan was to ask for it for free or even something like $30 or $40. I have a another fish store where the owner is a lot more knowledgable and he may be able to bring the fish back for me. You all say hypo is the best treatment for ick????

I use hypo for all my fish in QT. I don't think angel fish can tolerate copper, but I'm not sure if this is true or not. Lower the salinity gradually over a few days, and when the time comes to raise it, go even slower. I generally allow 7 to 10 days just for this step. No sense in trying to harm a fish that survived a QT period.

Actually just had a guy join our team at work who used to own/run 3 stores. He mentioned that the wholesale cost of fish, as a general rule, is about 25-35% of the cost that they sell it for. Of course they take the liability of stock and if the fish is healthy enough to sell, etc etc - If you are woried about making a bad offer, dont be.

The store won't be making money if it dies, He probably paid around $50 for the fish. Try and get it for free, if not offer $25. If he doesn't bite, walk away.

so lowering salinity is good for killing illness????? so then if its a FOWLR why would I ever keep my salinity high???? what is the ideal salinity for a FOWLR ???? Everyone tells me it should be the same as the Ocean which is 1.025-1.026. I don't understand the logic if I need to lower salinity to cure a fish then raise it again. Why not just leave it low???

What I dont get is..why doesnt the LFS setup his own QT tank to help the fish and in turn raise the value of it. Isnt the owner out money if the fish dies as he purchased it from his supplier?

There are a few reasons. If the tank has live rock in it the hypo will kill all invertebrates including pods. Running hypo long term also can cause internal damage to fish. Their organs cant function properly if left in hypo salinity permanently. Hypo is good for treating most diseases, but it is not good as a permanent condition.

That's so lame it has sapped my energy to make a good reply.

I don't understand..... which post is soooo lame????? or are you always just really grumpy for nothing???? maybe save your energy and not even post if its so lame

A fish being in that condition and then the owner seeing the only option as "culling" or selling a sick fish for 100 bucks is lame. Yeah, that makes me grumpy.
