My wife and I went to Kauai for our Honeymoon and decided to spend half of our trip on the Na Pali Coast at Kalalau Beach. We did the 11 mile hike in and out. At the 6 1/2 mile point you reach Hanakoa Stream and Valley. The trail crosses right over the stream. We decided to take a rest and a dip in the stream. Naturally, I started watching for any life in the stream. What I found was not at all what I expected - Bicolor Blennies. Or at least what looked like them. I sat and watched them for quite some time. The color, behavior, size, etc were dead on with specimens I've had in my tank. They just happen to be one of my all time favorite fish, so I'm fairly confident on the ID. I thought I would mention it here and see if anybody had any wisdom on the matter or know of some sort of freshwater look alike..
In regard to the stream, it was most definitely freshwater. It passed the freshwater taste test. Not even a little brackish. And it wasn't warm. Surely not aquarium warm. It took your breath away getting in it.
So maybe there's something I don't know, but a few google searches didn't turn up anything regarding Bicolor Blenny's being able to live in freshwater..
Share pictures or it didn't happen, right?
Getting a pic was very difficult, and his fins look more opaque in this pic than they actually were for some reason, but..
The stream and the pool in question
