The motor, wiring, and fan shaft are probably metal and those are the moving parts that really make the machine work.

Karl's right. They are plastic but the mesh screen where the air intakes is metal. After a year's use turns a nice rusty brown color Just cleaned mine today as a matter of fact. Had to. When I turned it off to vacuum up the clog it wouldnt turn back on. The shaft dealy stuck. After breaking it down and thoroughly cleaning it, spraying silicone on the shaft and air out it works great again. But maintenance is definately needed if you intend to use longer than 6-9 mo. I got mine at wally world for 11.99 and have used every pennies worth Not the greatest fan but works perfect for my lower profile canopy and does keep my T5's cool.
