Say hello to my Flameback pair!

If they are tiny in the way I think of tiny for centropyge, then you should be able to pick two and be fine as they are more than likely females. Once paired they should work out dominance and the dominant one will turn into a male. There are no differences in males and females when looking at individuals, but when there is a pair or harem the male is always the largest individual and the females are smaller.

Thanks for the response, I will be putting two on hold. I watched a few videos online with pairs of these guys and they are so cute together.

I agree with Kyle. IME if you get them tiny, it's easy to just drop two together and pair them. I've done it with argi, flame, and coral beauty.

It took two weeks before my pair actually got along. One was a tad bit bigger but lost almost all the battles within that two weeks. I had to intervene every single time I let them loose together. I paired them in a biocube 14 where intervening was possible. I almost gave up towards the end but a lucky turn of event occurred where the larger "finally" for the first time won a fight. When he won the last fight I did not intervene and left the small one in with him to let them sort who's boss. Had the larger one never won a fight the pair would, IMO, never been possible. My experience is only with a bc14 when pairing them. Others have said it was impossible to pair them in a bc14 but I did it. Others say put them both in a large aquarium and the fight should be minimum. That can be true but I wouldn't know as that was not the way I went. I would imagine it be a lot harder intervening in a larger aquarium. Keep us posted though. My pair is in my 117g now and I thought of creating a hatem with the third being a fireball but I'm a bit scared it will be torned to pieces.

A third one would be nice but I don't know if I would personally risk messing around when you have an established pair already.

I have got two on hold at the store and hoping that when they are in my QT that they will be fine, I have a 30 Gallon QT, so I will split it in half at first and then try them together. These guys are about .75 inches, very small and very cute

Will keep you posted on how they do

Fireballs are a different species too, I don't think it's just a regional color difference.

So, I have a full grown fireball, and if I wanted to pair it, would it be like clowns were if I got a much smaller one it would stay female? Or can full grown angels still be female if they never had a mate?

Just wondering, it would be cool to pair some in the future but my tank is too small right now.

A part of me is slapping me across the face each time I am tempted to get a third. But another part of me really wants a fireball. My lfs currently has two separate fireball but they are more yellow than I would like. When I find a small ORANGE fireball It will be mine :). Good luck btw

Your full grown fireball is a male. Get a small one if you we're to attempt pairing. I would put the large one in a separate container within the display tank and let the small new comer run around for a few days. Eventually the male must be released and when you decide to...have a chair ready, a net ready, the separate container ready and cross your fingers :). Is your fireball more orange or yellow?

Cool. But I don't have a bigger tank to move a pair of fireballs, if I still have my angel in the distant future I'll try it for sure though. Any idea how long these guys live? From what I've read it seems angels are one of the longer lived kinds of fish, but not sure on dwarfs.

Mine is orange like an african, but the tail is blue like a brazilian. Maybe these fish will darken with age?
